The next morning is spent in my home office. I only leave the room once to get something to eat and then lock myself inside again.

Everyone leaves me alone, and I welcome that. I need my alone time. Living alone, always doing everything by myself, it makes it difficult to accept support. I can tell they want to do something to ease my worries, but I don’t know them, and it’s hard to accept what they have to say when I can’t read them. The glimpses I’ve had so far aren’t enough.

So I throw myself into paperwork. The news is on in the background, but I try hard not to focus on it. It’s all the same stuff, still trying to figure out how the Senate is going to vote. They’re now calling the bill the Gifted Wrangle Bill, like it’s some kind of joke. No, it isn’t the official name, but it’s good enough to grab people’s attention. One politician called it that, and it took off from there.

It pisses me off. They’re making light of something so serious, like it’s all just a joke. And the ones really getting a kick out of it? The damn non-gifted.

The effects of the bill even existing is already causing a noticeable rift in society. People are out in droves, demanding attention with signs and marches. Most against the bill, some for it.

The uneducated are speaking out, spreading hate and fear for no other reason than jealousy.

It’s only a matter of time before any known gifted will be attacked if they dare step outside.

My cell phone goes off, Camden’s name flashing across the screen.

“What’s going on?” I answer.

“Pierce Rollins is flipping out. We can’t get him calmed down.”

“No way of getting him into the isolation room?”

“No. Not when he can turn his body into different stuff. We grab him, and he suddenly weighs a ton. Enough to make it questionable if the floor is even going to hold his weight.”

“Shit.” I’m on my feet, grabbing my purse and keys. “On my way. He’s in his room?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll be there soon.” I manage to hang up the phone without dropping it.

“What’s going on?” Jur asks as I fly through the house, not willing to slow down for anyone.

“Patient of mine.” I keep going. The moment I’m in my car, I’m turning it on, ready to peel out of my driveway. Before I can take off, the passenger door opens and Peyton jumps in. Raid takes the back seat. Refusing to waste any time trying to get them out, I take off. Jur’s truck is behind me, following closely as I fly down the highway and take the turn into the hospital a little too fast. The drive is only a couple minutes long, but I know how that can be a lifetime if a patient is having a breakdown.

All I can hope is that no damage has been done, that everyone still has their fingers and toes by the time I get there.
